Days Of Taste

AIWF Days of Taste® is a discovery-based program for fourth and fifth grade children to learn about food and how it weaves its way through daily life from the farm to the table.

The program teams up chefs, food professionals, farmers and teachers to guide elementary school children through an exploration of food and nutrition, giving them the opportunity to discuss, savor and compare different taste sensations and flavor from locally grown foods.

South Florida has a totally different harvest time, we usually do our Days of Taste program in the spring. Ours is a one day program where we go to the classroom, take the children to a market and go to a restaurant where they help to prepare a salad and lunch. In 2008/2009 we have paired with Whole Foods Market, FIU and Le Cordon Bleu, holding our program in these locales. Whole Foods Market has been our sponsor for two years now.

Previous Days of Taste we visited schools in Miami-Dade, Broward & Palm Beach County. The students have visited various specialty super markets such as Whole Foods, Norman Brothers, and Gardner's Market. Afterwards the children prepared lunch at Norman's in Coral Gables, Chef Allen in Aventura and Michael's Kitchen in Hollywood.

Professor Mike Moran has graciously chaired our Days of Taste. We are looking for new volunteers to formulate our program. If you are interested in volunteering, please e-mail phyllis217@aol.com.

Our 2008 program so far has visited Sunset Elementary in South Miami and Somerset Charter School in Miramar. The South Miami event was held at Whole Foods Coral Gables and the Miramar Event was held at Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts. We are grateful for the sponsorship of Whole Foods and Le Cordon Bleu and the participation of Mike Moran.

In 2009 we held DOT programs with six schools in Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties, visiting Whole Foods Markets for a very special tour.
