A Taste of Argentina
2013-03-23 - AIWF Washington (DC) - TASTE OF ARGENTINA 2:30 pm Saturday, March 23, 2013 TANGO Pastry 6100 Richmond Highway (Look for The Days Inn – sharing the building) Alexandria, Virginia 703- 477-2577 Forty dishes every Washingtonian must try in 2013 include: Facturas at Tango Pastry: “These popular Argentinean pastries are a metaphor for that nation’s diverse culture. In the not-too-sweet flaky layers lies the influence of Italian, Austrian, French and German immigrants. The rich dulce de leche filling? That’s the Latin contribution.” (from Washington Post’s 2013 list of DC’s favorite eats)Argentine people have a reputation for their love of eating. Social gatherings are commonly centered on sharing a meal. An invitation to have a meal at home is a symbol of friendship, warmth, and integration. The preparation of homemade food to celebrate a special occasion, to meet friends, and to honor someone is a basic feature of Argentine cuisine. Tango Pastry proprietor Sandra Comiskey honors our AIWF chapter by inviting us into her homey shop to share food and wine as it has been passed down from generation to generation. Argentine cuisine is rich and diverse, benefitting from a climate ranging from subtropical to sub polar, paired with the influences of Italian, Spanish, German, English, French, Jewish, Eastern Europeans, Welsh, and Swiss immigrants. Introduced to the native people who grew crops of squash, melons, and sweet potatoes, the cuisines of many melded into the wonderful national dishes of today. New World grapes and Old World winemakers likewise produced the fine Argentine wines enjoyed worldwide. Join us on Saturday, March 23, to enjoy Sandra’s very special comestibles, including empanadas, matambre (steak roll), pionono primavera (savory sponge cake roll), tarta Pascualina (spinach pie), facturas (sweet pastries), and her famous alfajores (shortbread cookies filled with dulce de leche). Sandra and her husband Jim Comiskey will speak about the derivation of her dishes. Check out the offerings at www.TangoPastry.com.
