I LOVE CRAB CAKES! The Karen Cathey Competition

The event you definitely don't want to miss!! The AIWF National Capital Area Chapter and Phillips Seafood will host the fifth annual "I Love Crab Cakes!" competition and fundraiser, named in honor of Karen Cathey.

Chefs from eight local restaurants will compete to win $2,500 to fund a culinary intern: Nate Auchter – Restaurant Associates; Arthur Cavaliere – Central Michel Richard, Luca DeMarchis –Westin Washington Dulles, Scott Drewno-The Source by Wolfgang Puck, Ann Marie James – Wagshal’s and Spring Valley Catering, Jordan Lloyd – Bartlett Pear Inn, Tom Meyer – Clyde’s Restaurant Group, and Lance Mion – The Westin Grand. This year ten students will compete from five local culinary schools – Anne Arundel Community College, Art Institute of Washington, L’Academie de Cuisine, Lincoln College of Technology, and Stratford University – for a $500 scholarship toward their education.

Our illustrious judging panel includes: amateur winner and AIWF Program Committee Chair, Tom Reidy; Board Member and local chef favorite, Janis McLean of 15 ria; Dennis Gavagan, Corporate Executive Chef, Phillips Seafood; Betsey Apple; chef Susan Callahan of the University of Maryland; Nycci Nellis of; David Hagedorn, ex-restaurateur and food writer; Amanda McClements of; and Abigail Fellows, previous professional winner and formerly of CommonWealth Pub; and Ris Lacoste, former AIWF chapter chair and beloved chef/owner of RIS, will again be our Mistress of Ceremonies. We'll enjoy the region’s greatest crab cakes from our professional chef competitors, a groaning board from Phillips Seafood, Bloody Mary’s, and fine wines. All proceeds will benefit our future internships, scholarships, and educational programs. Your support is crucial and much appreciated!!!

A drawing for our always fabulous door prizes will also support the Karen Cathey Educational Fund. Prizes include Calphalon pans, cookbooks, Tabasco, vodka, wine, and a special donation from Simon N Cellars who have also donated wine for our competing chefs.
